A plant-based diet can help!
For years, (since I was about 9 years old), I have always had migraines. As I got older my migraines systematically occurred more occasionally. Once every other month… then about once a month… as I got older it began to happen every other week, and then once to twice per week! It kept me from doing my favorite things. -Why? Because Migraines are so unpredictable, they are not an easy target for doctors to treat. Sure they’ll prescribe some type of drug but did they help me at all? Nope. They did, however, help the doctor increase his paycheck.
How does a migraine feel? From what I’ve heard, it varies person to person. Here’s how mine felt:
- dizzy spells
- fainting, no energy to the point of collapse
- gurgly stomach pains
- occasional vomiting
- throbbing pain in head (feels like brain is trying to escape)
I tried everything to stop these symptoms, massaging my temples, scalp even my face… hot/cold towels on my head… nothing changed. The only valid treatment I was able to try that actually worked was sleep. I had to sleep off my migraine for at least 3 full hours in order to feel better. THREE HOURS! That meant that if I woke up with a migraine in a weekday, I’d have to call in sick at work or attempt a half day. If I had a migraine on a weekend, there goes my social life!
As many of you know, I decided to go #vegan this year- it’s been over seven months now, and I have not had a migraine since February. It’s odd, considering once/twice a week was the norm for me. But I’ve been spreading the message about plant-based diets for migraine control, in an attempt to help others who just feel like they want to die from their migraines. It’s a fact that a plant-based diet can prevent migraines, and it’s one of the many reasons I stick to it.
It’s been an amazing journey, treading through the waters of this lifestyle. Considering how many ailments I have prevented/cured just by changing the way I eat, I’ll never understand why many people are so terrified of the ‘v’ word (vegan). It’s one simple change you can make that will better your health overall, so why not?
